Cowboy Camping Stew

Cowboy Camping Stew is extremely simple and versatile. Basically, it’s a mixture of meat, potatoes, beans and spices thrown together in a dutch oven and cooked over a fire. You can follow this recipe from Get Out With The Kids to the T or you can experiment with different meats and beans. Enjoy!

Cowboy Camping Stew

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 3 potatoes cut into 1 inch squares
  • 1 onion
  • 1 can green beans
  • 1 can baked beans
  • 1 can kidney beans
  • 1 can tomato soup
  • 1 can sweet corn
  • 1 can chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)
  • salt and pepper
  • vegetable oil


  • Preheat the Dutch oven with all coals underneath. Cover bottom with oil.
  • Brown ground beef and cut up onions. Keep the lid off at this point.

  • Add potatoes.
  • Add canned contents. Stir.
  • Add spices. Stir.
  • Cook, covered, for 45 minutes or until potatoes are soft. Stir and rotate oven every 5 minutes.
